Who Was John Adams Savage?

John Adams Savage was a pioneer of Wisconsin higher education, serving as the first president of Carroll—the state’s first college. During his tenure as president from 1852 to 1863, he provided leadership that laid the groundwork for the growth of the college for the rest of the nineteenth century. John Adams Savage was a dynamic leader and successful fundraiser, and his efforts resulted in the construction of the school’s first Main Hall in 1852. Under his direction, the college graduated its first classes and devised our motto, “Christo et Litteris,” meaning “for Christ and Learning.”

The John Adams Savage Legacy Society gratefully acknowledges the benefactors who embody his spirit of exploration and discovery. Through their gifts of future support, members are vested partners in advancing our mission of preparing students for vocational success, lifelong learning, and service in a diverse and global society.
