As a Carroll student, Randy Kunkel ’80 was supported by Carroll faculty and a close circle of fellow students in finding his way as a gay man. It was a time when the broader society was not accepting of diversity.
“Being supportive of institutions that share our values is important to us,” says Randy. “But in visiting the campus and meeting with students and faculty, I recognize that Carroll has traveled a long journey forward and has become the place of hospitality and welcome I had hoped it would be. That will not continue without philanthropy and active promotion and support. It also keeps alive the spirit of Carroll faculty and students who are currently leading the way to welcome LGBTQ people.”
After retiring from the School District of Waukesha with 40 years of service as a teacher, district program coordinator, elementary school principal, and mentor, Randy and his husband, Michael Sukawaty, reside in Shorewood, Wisconsin. Randy retains strong ties to Carroll through philanthropy and service. Together, the couple has made a generous planned scholarship gift to the university and annual gifts to the Carroll Fund.
Randy serves on the Carroll Alumni Council and is actively involved in the Carroll Intercultural and Diversity Engagement Program.
“A planned gift is a different sort of gift—it’s an answer to the question, what type of world do we hope it will be in the future.”
