Tom Garrow ‘73 on Seeing Your Generosity Make a Difference

Tom Garrow ‘73

Thinking about my time at Carroll and how those four years influenced the next 50 years has been rewarding. I was a theatre arts major with a business minor and very much enjoyed the two tracks. Carroll had the 4-1-4 system then, so my first January Term was spent full-time in a theatre production. In my second year January Term the Carroll choir toured several countries in Europe, and from that experience I got the bug to study overseas and ended up in the Coventry program in Coventry, England.

Carroll was the right size for providing students like me lots of opportunities to do a wide variety of things, to get to know a wider variety of people than those with whom I had grown up, and to recognize my biases and have my assumptions challenged.

I have been involved in the world of philanthropy for more than 45 years and have seen what enjoyment people get out of helping others, seeing their volunteer work and their gifts combine with those of others to really make a difference to organizations and the people those organizations serve.

It’s great to see that and to do that.
